Leadership in the 21st Century

The nature of work has changed radically in the last 30 years. The products and services that we produce now require less repetitive activity and more creative thinking. The creative side of our brains needs to be developed, just as much as the technical and logical side. We have new generations of workers whose interaction with social media means that they now have an expectation of involvement in all aspects of their lives. We are also facing global economic challenges; competition, not just for mineral resources, but for educated and talented people.

For these reasons, the traditional command and control style of leadership cannot be the only or even the main style we use. In addition, leadership is no longer something used solely by the people at the top of organisations. For organisations to succeed, everyone needs these vital skills of leadership: working as effective colleagues in teams made up of diverse strengths; taking responsibility for leadership when the situation demands. A coach approach to leadership addresses many of these issues. The good news is that these skills, styles and tools of leadership can be learnt. In his talk, Bob Hughes will share his perspective on these changes and the key skills that we can all apply to equip us to succeed in this new world.
